What is assessed?

A typical neuropsychological evaluation of a school-age child may assess the following areas:

  • General intellect
  • Executive skills, such as organisation, planning, inhibition, and flexibility
  • Attention
  • Learning and memory
  • Language
  • Visual–spatial skills
  • Motor coordination
  • Behavioural and social-emotional functioning

Analysing a child's test scores against those of peers of similar ages enables the neuropsychologist to develop a comprehensive profile of your child's strengths and weaknesses. These results serve several purposes for those involved in the child's care:

• Assessments are instrumental in identifying the impacts of developmental, neurological, and medical issues like epilepsy, ADHD, dyslexia, or genetic disorders. They establish a baseline for monitoring treatment outcomes and tracking your child's development over time.

•   Characterising the impact of a medical condition on a child’s neurodevelopmental functioning: examples of medical conditions that may impact on cognition and neurodevelopment include but are not limited to prematurity or low birth weight, birth trauma, in utero substance exposure, neurological conditions such as epilepsy, and congenital brain conditions.

•    Addressing School Challenges: test results can explore reasons for your child's academic struggles, whether due to attention issues, language disorders, executive functioning etc. They also inform the design of interventions by leveraging your child's strengths and identifying areas for improvement.

•   Differentiating Disorders:different childhood disorders result in specific patterns of strengths and weaknesses. These profiles of abilities can help identify a child’s disorder and the brain areas that are involved. For example, testing can help differentiate neurodevelopmental disorders from the impact of other factors such as trauma and mood, or whether a language delay is due to a problem in producing speech, understanding or expressing language, social shyness, or cognitive delay.

•    Treatment and Intervention Planning: This involves evaluating the influence of medical conditions on neurodevelopment, identifying strengths and weaknesses to guide interventions, recognising comorbid neuropsychological issues affecting treatment, and furnishing pertinent information and support to various stakeholders.
